Companies Commit to Providing Over a Thousand T-Level Work Opportunities

In an exciting initiative aimed at empowering the youth, various companies have promised to provide hundreds of valuable work experience opportunities to over a thousand young individuals in Greater Manchester. This move is part of a focused effort to enhance vocational training and employment readiness among students.

These placements, lasting 45 days, are specifically designed for students enrolled in T-Level programs, which emphasize technical skills and are considered equivalent to three A-Levels. With this initiative, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority is collaborating closely with local educational institutions and businesses to increase the availability of T-Level work experiences.

Dylan Nomovi, a young man from Middleton, has recently started his placement at the renowned tech company IBM. He shared, "The atmosphere here is incredibly welcoming, and the team has been fantastic in helping me adjust to my new role." At just 17 years old and pursuing a T-Level in digital software development at The Manchester College, Dylan expressed his enthusiasm: "This opportunity is precisely what I hoped for, allowing me to gain real-world experience while continuing my education. I aspire to pursue a degree apprenticeship in a field like software design once I finish college."

T-Levels were introduced in 2020 for students post-GCSEs, with the structure allocating 80% of time to classroom instruction and the remaining 20% to hands-on industry placements. Though these courses span two years, there have been growing concerns regarding student retention rates. A report from the Education Policy Institute in 2024 revealed that nearly one-third of first-year students enrolled in health and science T-Level courses did not complete their studies.

Ella Tsui-Lau, an assistant principal at Manchester College, emphasized the importance of offering high-quality education and fostering strong partnerships with employers to keep students engaged in T-Level programs. She remarked, "Seeing our students transition into higher national apprenticeships or secure full-time jobs is incredibly rewarding."

Leon Butler, the Chief Executive of IBM in the UK and Ireland, where approximately 600 employees work in Manchester, noted, "Students are currently engaged in creating an e-commerce website, programming with HTML, and exploring cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence. Every day, I'm astonished by the talent and potential displayed by students participating in T-Level courses and apprenticeship programs." He added, "We ensure they become acclimated to business settings, including practicing presentations, so they are well-prepared for corporate environments."

There are more than 20 subjects available under the T-Level framework, covering areas such as accounting, craft and design, engineering, and media production. The academic portion of these courses also includes essential subjects such as English and Maths.

Declan Brooks, another student pursuing digital software development, shared his perspective: "The T-Level program guaranteed me a placement at a prestigious company like IBM, making it an easy choice for me. I’m eager to break into the workforce and advance my career aspirations; eventually, I would like to start my own business." The 16-year-old from Hazel Grove in Stockport added, "Getting a foot in the door is crucial for my future.

In Greater Manchester, an innovative technical alternative is being introduced to complement the existing English Baccalaureate, fostering robust connections between colleges and local businesses. The initiative known as the Greater Manchester Baccalaureate aims to provide young people with a clear pathway to high-quality job opportunities in sectors that are expanding within the local economy.

The combined authority is working diligently to increase the number of college placements available and aims for all young people in the region to have access to these opportunities by 2030.
