In light of Farmers’ Day celebrations earlier this month, which carried the inspiring theme "Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future," it’s crucial that we continue to champion local food production and consumption. This initiative not only encourages self-reliance but also fortifies our economy against external shocks.
As part of the ‘Eat Ghana Rice Campaign’, this theme aligns perfectly with our ongoing advocacy for the widespread adoption of Ghana Rice. Once considered a luxury, rice has now become an essential part of daily meals in households across Ghana. The domestic production of paddy rice has seen remarkable growth, soaring from 302,000 metric tonnes in 2010 to nearly 987,000 metric tonnes by 2023. This impressive increase is a testament to the dedication of our farmers and the positive effects of governmental support in areas such as seed quality, mechanization, irrigation, and overall resource allocation.
However, despite such substantial progress, Ghana still spends over GHS 3 billion annually on rice imports. This is a staggering amount of money that could instead circulate within our economy, benefiting local farmers, processors, transporters, and market vendors throughout the rice supply chain. By keeping these funds within our borders, we can bolster rural economies, create job opportunities for our youth, and nurture a more resilient agricultural landscape.
This underscores the significance of the ‘Eat Ghana Rice Campaign’. It is essential for all of us to participate actively in promoting the consumption of locally produced rice. This campaign is pivotal not only for reducing our reliance on imports but also for enhancing agro-processing, fostering local industry, and ensuring food security for our nation. It is directly linked to initiatives such as the Feed Ghana Programme, the 24-Hour Economy Policy, and our commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement.
Moreover, this campaign aims to reshape consumer behavior, dispel long-standing myths, and instill a sense of national pride. In recent years, Ghana Rice brands have significantly improved, with many now meeting the stringent standards set by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA). These brands are clean, well-processed, and polished, making them perfect for popular dishes like Jollof and Waakye. It’s high time we dismiss the outdated notion that Ghanaian rice is inferior or contains stones; that perception no longer holds true. Brands such as Mama Gold, Striker Gold, Efie Ne Fie, Nana’s Rice, Champion, Avalavi Perfume Rice, Copa, Star, Asafoods, and Wofa K are examples of local products that can compete with or even surpass imported varieties.
I would like to take this moment to issue a heartfelt plea to corporate leaders and organizations who are considering gifting rice and chicken to their employees during the holiday season. I strongly encourage everyone to prioritize Ghana Rice as your go-to choice and lead by example by purchasing it for your friends and colleagues, particularly during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Ghana Rice not only meets but exceeds the expectations of today’s consumers. Across the nation, rice millers and processors are delivering high-quality, nutritious products processed to international standards, allowing families to trust that each grain is safe and of excellent quality. Choosing Ghana Rice is more than just a purchase; it’s an investment in our country. Every bag bought contributes to the local economy, supports Ghanaian farmers and their communities, and ensures that income remains within our borders.
Opting for Ghana Rice is also a celebration of national pride, reflecting our faith in the capabilities of our people and our agricultural system to produce food that stands tall among the world’s best. Beyond pride, there is real value for consumers. Ghana Rice provides the taste, aroma, and quality that every household desires while ensuring affordability. Additionally, because our locally produced rice is fresh and sourced nearby, it retains its natural nutrients, which are vital for healthy and balanced diets. Choosing Ghana Rice means choosing quality, uplifting livelihoods, embracing our cultural identity, and nourishing our families—all with one simple decision.
To all Ghanaians, I urge you: Let’s choose Ghana Rice together. Each bag you purchase supports a local farmer, each meal you prepare strengthens our economy, and every choice you make brings us closer to a self-sufficient, prosperous, and proud Ghana.
In conclusion, while I commend the Government of Ghana for its efforts to ensure that local farmers receive fair value for their contributions to the rice sector, we need to do even more. The government must leverage its influence to stimulate local demand further. It is encouraging that President John Mahama has directed key ministries, including the Ministry of Education, to prioritize procuring Ghana-grown food products like rice and eggs for schools, prisons, and other public institutions. It is essential that all agencies adhere to this directive and actively support Ghanaian farmers. Furthermore, I urge security agencies to clamp down on the illegal importation of rice, allowing our local farmers to compete effectively. With unity, determination, and a collective commitment, we can transform our rice sector into a cornerstone of Ghana’s agricultural future.
