The ALLCO Fish Hatchery and Geoff Clayton Rivers Heritage Centre in Maple Ridge recently hosted a special event for families, offering a unique blend of outdoor adventure, education, and fun. The ALLCO Family Fishing Day, organized by the Alouette River Management Society (ARMS), was a resounding success, attracting around 50 participants eager to learn about local fish and wildlife.
One of the highlights of the event was the hands-on fishing experience. Teams from Go Fish BC and the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC guided participants in catching rainbow trout, providing a valuable learning opportunity. The event also featured a complimentary lunch, generously provided by the Maple Ridge Lions Club, ensuring a well-fed and content crowd.
But the educational aspect didn't stop at fishing. Families had the chance to meet 'Small Eyes', a Northern Spotted Owl ambassador from the Northern Spotted Owl Breeding Society. This encounter offered a rare glimpse into the life of an endangered species, fostering a deeper understanding of the importance of conservation efforts.
Artistic activities were also on the agenda, with Grace of SeaStar Faces on hand to paint faces with sea creatures, adding a touch of whimsy to the day. However, the educational focus didn't end there. An ARMS summer student and dedicated volunteer introduced participants to the fascinating world of aquatic invertebrates, highlighting their role in maintaining the health of local waterways.
