The decline of a shopping hub: a community's concern
The heart of Ilkeston is at risk of becoming a shell of its former self. With the recent closure of Select, a well-known fashion brand, the Albion Centre is facing a growing concern - empty units and a potential decline in footfall. This issue has sparked conversations among residents and shopkeepers, leaving many wondering about the future of their beloved town.
Ruth Wilson, a long-time resident, expressed her worries: "When you walk through the centre, the number of empty shops is alarming. It makes you fear for the town's future." She continued, "While there are still people around, the number of vacant stores is concerning. It feels like nothing is being done to fill these spaces, and it's hard not to wonder if they'll ever be occupied again."
But here's where it gets controversial... Robert, another resident, believes it's not just about the empty units. He argues that the lack of independent shops and the dominance of chains is a bigger issue. "Business rates are likely to blame for the absence of unique, local businesses. It's a shame because it takes away the character of the town."
And this is the part most people miss... Despite the concerns, shopkeepers in the area report consistent footfall. A staff member at the Albion Centre shared their insights: "Select's closure was expected, and it wasn't due to a lack of customers. The centre does have a good flow of people, especially on weekends. However, the cost of running a business here might be a challenge for independents, which is why we mostly see chains."
Despite the challenges, the staff member highlights the community's loyalty: "Ilkeston has a wonderful community that supports local businesses. The High Street is busier than many other towns nearby. Having a shop here can be rewarding."
So, is the future of Ilkeston's shopping centre as bleak as it seems? Or can the community's spirit and support turn things around? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss the future of our towns!
