Pirates and pitcher José Urquidy ink $1.5 million, 1-year contract
The Pittsburgh Pirates have secured the services of right-handed pitcher José Urquidy for the 2025 season. The 30-year-old Urquidy, who underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2024, has agreed to a $1.5 million, one-year contract with the Pirates. This deal provides the team with valuable pitching depth and roster flexibility, as Urquidy can be optioned to the minor leagues.
Urquidy's journey to the Pirates has been an intriguing one. He previously played for the Houston Astros and the Detroit Tigers, showcasing his versatility as a pitcher. In his time with the Tigers, Urquidy made a successful return to the majors in September 2024, appearing in two relief games with a 7.71 ERA over 2 1/3 innings. This contract marks a new chapter in his career, offering an opportunity for him to contribute to the Pirates' pitching staff.
With a 4.00 ERA in 70 starts and 11 relief appearances for the Astros from 2019 to 2023, Urquidy brings a wealth of experience to the table. His 27-16 record and 4.08 ERA in 15 postseason appearances further highlight his capabilities. The Pirates, led by NL Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes, are adding a reliable arm to their rotation, providing a strong foundation for the upcoming season.
