Exciting changes are on the horizon for what has been hailed as 'England's grandest monument'! Plans aimed at enhancing the visitor experience at the iconic Ashton Memorial in Lancaster are about to be reviewed by local councillors.
Later this month, the city council will discuss an application to install a new lift in this Grade-I listed structure, which was constructed between 1906 and 1909 by Lord William Ashton, a prosperous industrialist, in honor of his second wife. This monumental building stands as a tribute not only to love but also to the architectural beauty that attracts countless visitors.
The proposed new lift is just one aspect of a broader strategy to improve various facilities within Williamson Park, where both the park and the memorial are owned by the council, making them vital attractions for events and weddings throughout the year.
In addition to the lift, there’s a separate planning application concerning the demolition of an outdated wooden pavilion-style café and shop from the 1980s, both of which have been deemed unsafe due to their deteriorating condition. Since this area falls within the Williamson Park Conservation Area, obtaining planning permission is essential before any work can commence.
Once the café is demolished, plans include laying down stone paving and erecting a charming white picket fence around the space. This cleared area will serve as a temporary site while a long-term vision is developed for its future use.
The Lancaster Civic Vision group has expressed its regret over the loss of the café building; however, they acknowledge that it no longer meets current needs and have conveyed their hopes for a suitable replacement ahead of the upcoming tourist season.
