Mads Pedersen's season has started with a devastating crash, but the real story lies in how he's handling the mental aftermath.
Former Danish national coach Anders Lund offers a unique perspective on Pedersen's mindset, revealing a complex emotional response.
"He is extremely bitter, there's no denying it," Lund shared with Eurosport.dk. "But his focus is laser-sharp. It's almost as if this setback has intensified his determination."
Pedersen's crash at the Volta a Comunitat Valenciana resulted in broken bones and a premature end to his season debut. Lund believes this emotional reaction is a sign of his resilience and goal-oriented mindset.
"It's a concentrated and determined Mads who wakes up each morning, already crafting a new plan," Lund explained.
The timing of the injury makes this psychological response crucial. Early-season crashes can have a lasting mental impact, especially when they disrupt months of preparation. However, Lund suggests Pedersen's reaction might be the opposite of what one would expect.
"He might be even more single-mindedly focused on his goals now," Lund added.
The challenge now is managing recovery while staying on track. Lund estimates a recovery period of around three weeks for such injuries, but wrist injuries can be particularly complex due to the constant vibration riders experience.
Before the crash, Pedersen was set to race in the Tour de la Provence and Paris-Nice, with Milan-San Remo as the first Monument of the season. These plans are now uncertain, but Lund emphasizes that Pedersen is already mentally engaged in finding a solution.
"The crash hasn't changed Pedersen's character; it's simply activated it earlier than expected," Lund concluded.
