The pressure was on, and the stakes couldn't be higher! Max Verstappen, fresh off a critical pole position at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, revealed a series of strategic adjustments made by Red Bull to his RB21, changes that ultimately helped him secure that coveted top spot.
The Dutchman, a four-time F1 drivers' champion, showcased his skill by setting two blistering push laps in Q3, proving his mettle when it mattered most. He's not alone on the grid; Lando Norris, currently leading Verstappen in the standings by a mere 12 points, will be right beside him, promising a thrilling race. And let's not forget Oscar Piastri, just four points behind Verstappen, ready to make his mark in this final showdown.
When questioned about the challenges of fine-tuning the car for qualifying under the cool night conditions, a stark contrast to the setting sun of the final practice session at the Yas Marina Circuit, Verstappen acknowledged that the tweaks made by the Milton Keynes-based squad were pivotal. "They definitely helped," he said, highlighting the impact of these changes on his pole-winning performance.
"You have to try and guess a little bit how much the track is going to improve," the 70-time grand prix winner explained, emphasizing the strategic gamble involved. "Of course, it cools down a lot, but you're never 100% sure if it's going to work." But here's where it gets controversial... Verstappen's confidence in the changes suggests a deep understanding of the car's dynamics and the track's evolution.
McLaren, with Norris and Piastri, initially seemed to have the upper hand in terms of outright pace. But Verstappen managed to seize the initiative between Q2 and Q3. "In Q2, I stayed on scrubbed tyres, and I think those laps already felt quite decent," he shared. "And of course, in Q3 around here, track temperature is coming down, you know that you can push a bit more, and that's exactly what we did. We found a bit more lap time, and, of course, are incredibly happy to be in first." And this is the part most people miss... Verstappen's ability to adapt and push the car to its limits in changing conditions is what sets him apart.
He concluded, "That's the only thing that we can do, right? That's the only thing that we can control. Try to just maximise everything we have and then what we can with the car. And we definitely did that there in qualifying."
