A dramatic police chase in Strand has ended with the capture of a fugitive who was on the run for nearly a month. But here’s where it gets even more shocking — authorities say the man was shot in the chest during a tense confrontation just moments before his arrest.
Denver Pietersen, a 34-year-old facing attempted murder charges, escaped from the Strand Magistrate’s Court holding cells on 27 October along with two other detainees. The escape sparked a widespread manhunt that gripped the local community, raising questions about security at the court’s detention areas.
His fellow escapees — 22-year-old Glenville Jantjies, also charged with attempted murder, and 25-year-old Rastum Alfestus, accused of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm — didn’t stay free for long. Alfestus was tracked down and arrested at a home in Strand the very next day, while Jantjies chose to surrender himself to authorities on 31 October after an intensive search made hiding nearly impossible.
Pietersen, however, managed to stay ahead of the law — until now. Police finally cornered him in the Morkel Cottage informal settlement in Strand on Tuesday, 25 November, at approximately 2:35 p.m. According to reports, when officers closed in, Pietersen allegedly tried to flee once again. That’s when the situation turned violent, and he was shot in the chest during the encounter.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the arrest and provided limited details, stating that the suspect is currently under police guard in a nearby hospital, receiving medical treatment. “Be advised that the 34-year-old suspect was arrested at Morkel Cottage and remains in hospital care under police supervision,” Van Wyk said.
He added that the case has now been handed to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), which will oversee the inquiry into the shooting. “Their communication department is best positioned to handle further media inquiries,” the captain noted.
