The Super Bowl is a highly anticipated event, and for two young quarterbacks, Sam Darnold and Drake Maye, it's an opportunity of a lifetime. But with the pressure and intensity of the game, it's easy to forget the joy of playing. That's why ex-NFL star Matt Hasselbeck, with his wealth of experience, has some wise words to share.
Hasselbeck, a three-time Pro Bowler, knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. He appeared in Super Bowl XL, leading the Seattle Seahawks, but fell short against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite the loss, Hasselbeck's message is clear:
"Well, have fun. I think that's a major thing."
Hasselbeck draws from his own experiences and those of his father, Don Hasselbeck, who won Super Bowl XVIII with the Raiders. He recalls the team's enjoyment and how it fueled their success. Even when Hasselbeck joined the Green Bay Packers, fresh off two consecutive Super Bowl appearances, the fun factor remained.
"In Seattle, we were cutting it, having fun without even realizing it. It didn't feel like a job."
So, what's his advice for Darnold and Maye?
"One play at a time, guys. Cut it loose. Sixty minutes, all you've got. Control what you can control. Cut it loose and have fun."
But here's where it gets controversial: Hasselbeck emphasizes the importance of staying present and not looking too far ahead.
"There's no such thing as a 14-point touchdown. It does no good to look ahead. One play at a time."
Both quarterbacks are facing injuries and tough defenses. The Seahawks, with the fewest points allowed per game in the regular season, will battle the Patriots, who have shut down their opponents in the playoffs.
Hasselbeck's career spanned four teams over 18 years, and his stats speak for themselves: 209 games, 60.5% pass completion, 36,638 passing yards, 212 touchdowns, and 153 interceptions.
The Super Bowl showdown between the Seahawks and Patriots is set for Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
So, will Hasselbeck's advice of having fun and staying present be enough for Darnold and Maye to succeed? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss!
