Thanasi Kokkinakis: The Musical Side of Tennis?
Get ready for a unique story that blends tennis and music! Thanasi Kokkinakis, the Australian tennis star, is back on the ATP Tour after a year-long break, and he's bringing some interesting insights with him.
But here's where it gets controversial: Kokkinakis' time off wasn't just about recovery; it sparked an unexpected journey into the world of music production. And this is the part most people miss...
In an exclusive interview with ATPTour.com, Kokkinakis revealed his unexpected musical adventure. "I bought DJ decks and dabbled in music production for a while," he shared. "It was a fun distraction, but I soon got hooked on PlayStation and my competitive nature kicked in there!"
Kokkinakis' story adds to the rich history of tennis players crossing over into music. From Ugo Humbert's piano skills to Yannick Noah's pop career, tennis stars have often found creative outlets beyond the court. But Kokkinakis' journey is unique; he's one of the few to explore music production during a career hiatus.
"Releasing a track? That's probably a post-career move!" Kokkinakis joked. "I learned the basics, but stepping up to the next level requires focus, and I'm not there yet. It's harder than I thought."
On Monday, Kokkinakis will step back into the spotlight at the Adelaide International, his hometown tournament. It's been a year since his last tour-level singles match, and he's facing Sebastian Korda in a highly anticipated comeback.
Last year, Kokkinakis underwent a rare surgery on his right pectoral muscle, a procedure that kept him off the court for an entire season. It was a risky move, but one that he felt was necessary to continue his career. "It was tricky being away from the tour," he admitted. "But I stayed busy with commentary, sponsor work, and rehab. It was a full-time job, and I'm grateful to be back in the draw for this tournament."
While he kept an eye on tennis and followed his friends' progress, Kokkinakis also explored other passions. "I watched tennis here and there, but I was more into basketball. I love the NBA!"
As he prepares for his comeback match, Kokkinakis is optimistic yet realistic. "Just being back is a win in itself. I don't know if I can get through a match or a few, but I've done the work. Being able to step on court and feel those nerves again, seeing the crowds and cameras, it's an adjustment, but it's worth it."
