In a shocking incident that has left a small Western Australian community reeling, a man was sentenced in Perth District Court for the terrifying abduction of two young boys from their home. This case, which unfolded in 2023, revealed details so harrowing that the presiding judge drew parallels to the notorious kidnapping of four-year-old Cleo Smith.
Jonathan Richard Anthony, 36, faced sentencing on Friday after it was revealed that he had disguised himself with a wig and mask to stealthily enter a neighbor's residence during the early morning hours. His first victim was eight-year-old James Uzice, whom he forcibly removed from his bed. After taking James back to his own home in Moora, Anthony threatened him, saying he would kill him if he attempted to escape. The situation escalated as he returned to abduct James's 12-year-old brother, Fabiano.
The court was informed that Fabiano bravely resisted Anthony’s attempts to drag him out of their home on March 31, ultimately managing to escape and alert the authorities. Surveillance cameras installed at their residence captured the frightening sequence of events.
Law enforcement, alongside the tight-knit community, coordinated an immediate search for James. The boy was found about three hours later, trapped in Anthony’s house, where he was heard pleading for help, screaming, "help me, help me, I’m in here." Disturbingly, during his captivity, Anthony had forced James to consume alcohol and refused him access to a bathroom, telling him to "just p--- himself."
This entire ordeal was documented by Anthony’s own security cameras, which were later reviewed by Judge Seamus Rafferty during the sentencing. He expressed grave concern over the psychological impact this incident would have on both the boys and their family, stating, “This was every parent’s worst nightmare... The boy’s fear was palpable.” He further noted the significant emotional toll such events inflict on children and their guardians, creating long-lasting feelings of insecurity.
State prosecutors remarked on the bizarre nature of the crime, likening it to scenes one might expect to see in films or television dramas. This comparison was particularly pointed given its resemblance to the abduction of Cleo Smith, who was taken from a campsite in November 2021 and was eventually rescued after 18 days. Her kidnapper, Terrence Kelly, received a sentence of over 13 years.
Steven Uzice, the father of James and Fabiano, shared his shock with the media, recounting how Fabiano had come into the house exclaiming, "my brother is missing, someone tried to drag me out." Upon finding James, a relieved Steven comforted him, saying, "now you’re safe, daddy’s here. Nobody can hurt you." It was a surreal moment for the family, who could hardly believe such horror could occur within their quiet community.
During the sentencing, Judge Rafferty emphasized that failing to impose a prison term would be a disservice to justice, despite Anthony's claims of suffering from schizophrenia and the effects of substance abuse that led to psychotic episodes. In his statement to the police, Anthony said he was experiencing a paranoid delusion, convinced that he needed to 'save' the children from perceived threats.
He ultimately pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of forcibly detaining a child, one count of deprivation of liberty, two counts of aggravated burglary, one count of disguising to commit a crime, and one count of indecently recording a child. As a result, he received an eight-year prison sentence, retroactively dated to his arrest in March 2023, with eligibility for parole set for March 2029. Additionally, a lifetime restraining order was established to protect both boys from any future contact with Anthony.
