Ever wonder who could hit the hardest in the ring? Even the legendary Angelo Dundee, the man behind the greatness of Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard, had a surprising answer. This boxing icon, celebrated for his strategic brilliance and ability to guide champions, worked with some of the most formidable names in the sport. But when asked about the hardest puncher he ever trained, Dundee didn't pick a household name.
Dundee's journey in boxing began during World War II, where he honed his skills in United States Air Force boxing tournaments. Later, he joined forces with his brother, Chris Dundee, operating out of the iconic Fifth Street Gym in Florida. His career is a testament to his expertise, having trained a staggering 16 world champions. This impressive roster includes boxing legends like Ali, Leonard, George Foreman, and Jimmy Ellis, leading to his well-deserved induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992.
In a recently resurfaced interview with The Ring, Dundee was asked to name the hardest puncher he ever worked with. The answer wasn't Ali or Foreman, both known for their power. Instead, Dundee chose Florentino Fernandez, a Cuban fighter who never achieved world title honors.
"I love boxers, but I’ve trained some bangers in my time. Pinklon Thomas could whack, but nobody could punch like [Florentino] Fernandez," Dundee revealed. He continued, "He was the best puncher out of Cuba. He was a converted southpaw, so his left hook was murder." Dundee even recounted how Fernandez broke Gene Fullmer’s forearm with a left hook during their middleweight title fight. "He could hurt anyone with any kind of punch no matter where it landed."
But here's where it gets controversial... Fernandez's career, though powerful, didn't translate into championship success. He lost to Fullmer by a split decision in his only world title challenge in 1961. He retired in 1972 with a record of 50-16-1 (43 KOs), and passed away in 2013.
